"Melba is a great character for Earth Day"

How did you choose the main characters and the title?


The main characters chose me. Melba and Matt floated around my imagination shyly getting to know one another. Their loner sides and their intelligence made a very good odd fictional match.

The title nearly killed me. The working title was “Your House.” Everyone yawned at that. I switched to “Finding the Right Distance” once I found a publisher. This phrase came from a quote at the front of the novel: “The secret to any relationship is finding the proper distance.” But it’s hard to show distance in a cover image without alienating readers. And truly, Matt and Melba overcome their need to keep people at a distance. The heart of the novel is human connection. I made a list of two dozen possible titles for my creative team to consider. The one that leapt out for everyone was “Guest House.” It’s from a gorgeous Rumi poem, also quoted at the front of the novel. “This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival…”
